She was walking out of the girls bathroom from school. She hadn't even needed to go, it's just that she wanted a break from everything. She went in and tidied her hair and skirt. She sighed, she probably looked as she felt-a mess. The night before, at home, was long and horrible, and the day at school was even longer. But at least she only had one more class left. Sighing softly once more, and dawning on a feigned smile, she had left the bathroom.
But one of her friends began talking to her, and she tilted her head backwards as they walked down the hall. Then it happened.
A boy-who was only a few months older than her but much taller and more muscular was walking down the hall as well, toward her. He too was talking to someone behind him and as he walked and she obliviously turned her head at the same moment he did. They were face to face, and she froze mid sentence, her lips still parted a little. Not like it mattered, she completely forgot what she was talking about earlier. Her head was tilted to the right while his the left, and their lips were only inches apart. She could feel his soft and warm breath on her lips and neither moved for a long moment. But the class bell rung, freeing them from their planted state. She blushed a very-almost unnoticeable- light pink and he backed away politely, apologizing. She nodded, saying it was alright and apologized as well. It was quite alright, in fact she had a strange feeling as they were that close, and she believed she liked it.
She began to walk past him but he stopped her, gently grabbing her wrist. She turned, looking at him inquisitively and he quickly let go, not wanting to be rude. That's what she liked about him; he was always kind and polite to her. Not because he had to, but because he actually wanted to.
"...Yes?" she asked in a patient voice.
"I noticed...I noticed you seemed to be having a hard time," she was ready to come up with an excuse, to deny it, because she didn't want to worry anyone. But she looked him in the eyes, he knew the truth. She nodded slightly and waited for him to continue. "And I hope it gets better-and if it already is then I'm glad" he said sincerely. Another thing she realized she liked about him, he didn't pry to what her problems might be, but he was ready to listen never the less.
She smiled, a genuine smile. One that wasn't fraud but one of her own free will-one of actual happiness.
"Thank you," she said, her voice sweet and polite as she had been raised. But underlying it her happiness could be heard.
The tardy bell rang, and they both had to go to their classes. He could have said 'If you need to talk, I'm here for you' or 'If you need someone, come to me' but they both already knew it. She could see it in his eyes, and his smile and in the way he talked to her. And he could see she understood. Nodding once he left to his class, as did she.
But on her way to class, and during class, and even when she was back home she could only think of one thing, their encounter. It replayed through her mind and made her smile each time. After all their lips and that one kiss were
Just a Breath Away
